Colour In Currie
Colour In Currie mural painted in collaboration with Nicole Wolf. Located in Currie's Parade Square this was historically reserved as solely a ceremonial space for the military. Now most of the ex-military buildings that line its perimeter have been converted into schools, as a result this 120 meter squared space of asphalt acts as a sort of field for these students. During the initial lockdown we saw many children take to the sidewalk with their chalk to brighten up our streets in these especially uncertain times. This mural is inspired by these kids as well as acting as a thank you to them. We painted a series of outlines that can be coloured in with chalk, washed clean by the elements, and then coloured in all over again, making it a living painting embodying the resilience of our community's youth and also making it Calgary's biggest colouring page! Pictured above is just one portion of the piece, these sections we dubbed "activity clusters" while conceptualizing how the space would be occupied. There are half a dozen activity clusters, tied together with animal tracks and other interactive paintings. Students can interact with their cohorts in one section, while other groups of children are able to interact with other sections, allowing them to be safely socially distanced, apart but playing together. Breaking it into these sections also enabled us to create portions that would hopefully not be too daunting to be coloured in, with characters a size that would be larger than life but still readable to those viewing it from a child's height of vision. All drone photos taken by Eric Gonzales.
